Baltasar Ebang Engonga corruption trialBaltasar Ebang Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has re-emerged at the centre of one of the country’s most high-profile corruption trials after spending ten months in the infamous Black Beach Prison.
Engonga, previously known for a controversial sextape scandal that went viral in 2024, appeared before a Malabo court on June 30, 2025. Prosecutors have accused him of leading a complex embezzlement scheme that drained millions from the state between 2015 and 2020 while he held multiple government roles, including his tenure at the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance (DGAR).
The charges brought against him are significant:
  • Embezzlement: 8 years
  • Illicit Enrichment: 4 years and 5 months
  • Abuse of Office: 6 years and 1 day

He also faces a financial penalty of over $1.5 million and a complete ban from holding public office during the length of his sentence.
Engonga is not alone in the dock. The trial implicates six other former senior officials, including Carmelo Julio Matogo Ndong, Ireneo Mangue Monsuy Afana, and Florentina Iganga Iñandji. Collectively, they are accused of creating a systemic web of corruption that spanned multiple ministries and agencies.

The defence argues that the entire case is politically motivated. Engonga’s legal team points to the timing of the charges—just months after his sextape scandal rocked local and diaspora social media—as an indication that the state is seeking to tarnish his image permanently. They also maintain that the prosecution has failed to provide conclusive evidence tying Engonga to the misappropriated funds.
