The Duchess of York Epstein emails have forced Sarah Ferguson out of two major charity roles. Julia’s House children’s hospice and the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation both confirmed they had ended their links with her.
The emails, revealed at the weekend, showed Ferguson calling Jeffrey Epstein a “supreme friend.” The fallout was immediate. On Monday, Julia’s House said it was “inappropriate” for her to continue as a patron. The charity thanked her for past support but confirmed the Duchess of York patron removed decision.
The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation made the same move hours later. Founders Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse said: “We were disturbed to read of Sarah, Duchess of York’s, correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein. In light of the revelations, it would be inappropriate for her to continue as a patron. We thank her for her kindness and past support.” The announcement made clear why Sarah Ferguson charities dropped her.
The Duchess of York Epstein controversy began with emails dated April 26, 2011. They came only weeks after Ferguson told the Evening Standard she would never deal with Epstein again. At the time, she was under fire for accepting £15,000 from him. She admitted it was a “gigantic error of judgment” and promised to repay the money.
Privately, though, Ferguson sent a different message. In the leaked emails, she apologised to Epstein and said she had been “bedridden with fear.” She wrote: “You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family. Please understand. I didn’t want to hurt Andrew one more time. I was in over-riding fear. I am sorry.”
Her spokesman later defended her actions. He said the email was written while Epstein threatened legal action. He added: “The duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago. Her first thoughts are with his victims. Like many people, she was taken in by his lies. As soon as she was aware of the allegations, she cut off contact and condemned him publicly.”
