Black Stars Kit Named No.1 World Cup Jersey by New York Times
Ghana’s Kente-Inspired Jersey Tops 2026 World Cup Rankings
Ghana’s white World Cup jersey has received international recognition after being ranked as the best kit among all 48 nations competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The ranking, published by The New York Times, placed the Black Stars’ jersey at the top of its tournament kit list, ahead of football powerhouses from Europe, South America and beyond.
According to the publication, the standout feature of the jersey is its bold multi-coloured pattern inspired by traditional Ghanaian kente cloth.
The design blends modern football aesthetics with elements of Ghana’s cultural heritage, creating a look that immediately captures attention.
The New York Times particularly praised the striking web-like pattern woven into the shirt, describing it as one of the most distinctive designs unveiled for the tournament.
“Wow. In general, I’m not wild about Puma’s designs this year because they don’t seem massively interesting, but that’s absolutely not an accusation you can level against this one. It looks like a gigantic, multi-coloured spider’s web, because that’s exactly what it is,” the publication wrote.
The article explained that the design draws inspiration from kente, the traditional hand-woven fabric that has become one of Ghana’s most recognised cultural symbols.
It further highlighted the connection between kente patterns and the legendary Anansi spider from Ghanaian folklore, noting that the jersey successfully combines storytelling, tradition and contemporary design.
“The design is inspired by kente, a traditional Ghanaian hand-woven textile, which apparently originated from weavers trying to replicate the patterns of a spider called Anansi from their ancient folklore,” the publication added.
The recognition marks a significant turnaround for the jersey, which initially received mixed reactions from some football fans and sections of the Ghanaian public when it was first unveiled.
Since then, however, the kit has gained wider appreciation both locally and internationally, with many supporters praising its originality and strong cultural identity.
The ranking comes just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Ghana heads into the tournament with renewed optimism and will face England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team in Group L.
While the Black Stars will be hoping to make an impact on the pitch, their jersey has already earned global recognition as one of the tournament’s biggest winners.
