Wizkid Reveals He Left Banky W’s Label With Zero Naira
How Wizkid Walked Away From Success to Build a Global Career
Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid has shared one of the toughest decisions of his career. The singer revealed that he left Banky W’s record label with no money, even though he had already become one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
Speaking in an interview with Capital Xtra, Wizkid said he chose to leave because he wanted more independence and greater control over his career.
According to the award-winning artiste, he walked away from the label with “zero naira” despite his growing success at the time.
Wizkid explained that the decision did not come from anger or resentment. Instead, he saw it as an important step in his personal and professional growth.
He also acknowledged the role Banky W played in his journey. The singer thanked his former mentor for the opportunities and guidance he received during the early stages of his career.
“I left the label, and it’s so crazy because nobody really knows that story. I literally had to leave with zero naira. And I was Wizkid, but I just felt like I couldn’t keep doing this,” he said.
Wizkid noted that many artistes eventually reach a stage where they want to explore new opportunities and build something for themselves.
Although he valued his time at the label, he knew he could not stay there forever. He believed he needed a new challenge to continue growing as an artist.
Starting over came with uncertainty. However, Wizkid remained confident in his talent and believed his next project would open bigger doors.
He recalled telling members of his team that the album he was working on would take his music to audiences around the world.
That confidence was driven by faith, determination, and a belief that greater success lay ahead.
“I released that album. I kept telling my boys that I was going to tour the world with this one. I was hopeful and thankful to God. Everything just kept happening. It’s God’s blessings,” he added.
The revelation offers a rare look into a defining moment in Wizkid’s career. It also highlights the risks he took before becoming one of Africa’s most successful global music stars.
Today, Wizkid stands among the leading figures behind the international rise of Afrobeats. He has achieved global hits, sold-out tours, and collaborations with some of the biggest names in music.
