FIFA Breaks Silence After Somali Referee Denied Entry to US

FIFA Says It Cannot Override US Immigration Decision on Omar Artan

FIFA Breaks Silence After Somali Referee Denied Entry to USThe Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has said it cannot influence immigration decisions made by the United States following the denial of entry to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The governing body issued a statement after growing criticism from football fans, officials and commentators over Artan’s inability to enter the United States to officiate at the tournament.

According to FIFA, US authorities informed the organisation that Artan’s immigration status would not be changed, leaving the federation unable to intervene.

FIFA Breaks Silence After Somali Referee Denied Entry to US“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Artan’s status will not be changed at present,” the statement said.

The organisation further stressed that host governments retain the final authority over visa approvals and entry decisions during international sporting events.

“In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country,” FIFA added.

Artan, who was named Africa’s Best Referee in 2025, had reportedly overcome earlier visa challenges before travelling to the United States.

Reports indicate that he flew from Kenya and transited through Turkey before arriving in the US, where he was expected to join other match officials selected for World Cup duties.

However, upon arrival, immigration authorities denied him entry and returned him to Turkey.

The decision has generated significant backlash across social media and within sections of the global football community.

Many critics argue that major international tournaments should have clear guarantees for players, officials and accredited personnel to avoid situations that could affect participation.

Others have questioned whether FIFA should have secured stronger assurances from host nations before awarding hosting rights for the tournament.

The controversy has also renewed debate about immigration and travel restrictions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Despite FIFA’s explanation, criticism continues to grow, with some fans and pundits describing the situation as an embarrassment for both the tournament and the sport.

For now, Artan remains unable to take part in the World Cup, ending what would have been a historic appearance for one of Africa’s most highly regarded referees.
