Mexico Defeat Ghana Ahead Of 2026 World Cup
Benjamin Asare Error Costs Ghana In Mexico Defeat
Mexico defeated Ghana 2-0 in an international friendly at Estadio Cuauhtémoc as both nations continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Goals from Brian Gutierrez and Guillermo Martínez Ayala secured victory for El Tri in a competitive encounter ahead of the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Mexico made a fast start and took the lead early in the match after Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made an error that allowed Gutierrez to score the opener.
The hosts controlled possession for much of the first half and went into the break with a deserved 1-0 advantage.
Ghana improved after halftime and came close to finding an equaliser during their strongest spell of the game.
Black Stars forward Sakyi hit the post twice, leaving Ghana frustrated as they searched for a way back into the match.
Mexico later regained control and doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Guillermo Martínez Ayala finished calmly to make it 2-0.
The result hands Ghana another setback ahead of the World Cup, with the Black Stars now set to face Wales in their final warm-up match before the tournament begins this summer.
