Saka Fires Arsenal Past Fulham in Thrilling Premier League Battle
Arsenal Close the Gap on Liverpool After Saka’s Triumphant Return
Bukayo Saka made a sensational return to action, scoring a crucial goal as Arsenal secured a 2-1 victory over Fulham on Tuesday, closing the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to nine points.
The England international had been out since December 21 but wasted no time making an impact after coming off the bench. Saka’s header secured the win for Arsenal after Mikel Merino’s deflected strike had given them a first-half lead.
While the victory was a boost for Mikel Arteta’s side, it came with a setback as key defender Gabriel Magalhães limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury. With Arsenal set to face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals, Arteta now faces a defensive selection dilemma.
Fulham managed to pull one back in stoppage time through Rodrigo Muniz, but it was too late to salvage a point. The defeat leaves Fulham in eighth place, three points behind a Champions League qualification spot, denting their European ambitions.
With a crucial Champions League tie ahead, Arsenal remains firmly in the Premier League’s top five, moving 14 points clear of sixth-placed Newcastle. Though Liverpool remains in pole position in the title race, Arsenal’s focus is now on European success, with Saka’s return offering a timely boost.
Merino’s deflected shot put Arsenal ahead in a game where clear-cut chances were limited. However, Saka’s introduction in the 65th minute sparked a wave of energy inside the Emirates. Just eight minutes later, he headed in a precise cross from Gabriel Martinelli to secure the crucial win.
Rodrigo Muniz had a chance to set up a tense finale but failed to convert an open header before scoring a late consolation goal. Despite Fulham’s late surge, Arsenal held firm, maintaining pressure on Liverpool ahead of their Merseyside derby clash with Everton.
