Simi Old Tweets Spark Government Inquiry
NAPTIP Reviews Simi Old Tweets Controversy
The Simi old tweets controversy has drawn official attention in Nigeria after resurfaced posts attributed to the singer triggered widespread debate online. As viral social media posts circulated in recent days, some members of the public called for an investigation into comments allegedly made more than a decade ago when the Nigerian singer Simi worked at her mother’s daycare centre.
The screenshots, which users claim date back about 14 years, reference her experiences during that period. Although the context of the posts remains disputed, their circulation prompted renewed scrutiny and public pressure for authorities to assess whether any wrongdoing occurred. Consequently, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) confirmed it is reviewing the matter.
In a statement issued on February 24, NAPTIP said it remains committed to investigating credible reports relating to daycare misconduct allegations and child protection Nigeria cases. The agency urged anyone with factual information or direct knowledge connected to the viral posts to come forward confidentially. Officials stressed that any inquiry would be guided by evidence rather than speculation.
The development follows mounting online discussion, where reactions have ranged from concern to defence of the artist. Some critics argued that the nature of the comments warranted closer examination. Others questioned whether the posts had been interpreted without full context.
Simi responded publicly, stating that the tweets were written when she was 23 and trying to build her music career while assisting at her mother’s daycare. She maintained that the posts reflected ordinary daily experiences rather than anything inappropriate. According to her statement, she rejects what she described as attempts to twist her words into false narratives.
She further explained that her visibility as a public figure now subjects her past social media activity to intense scrutiny. While she initially hesitated to remove the old posts, she acknowledged that some have since been deleted by her team due to their sensitivity for her family.
The debate has also drawn commentary from other public figures. Actor Deyemi Okanlawon expressed support for Simi while emphasising that conversations about sexual violence should remain focused and not be diverted into unrelated arguments. His remarks added another layer to an already charged discussion about accountability, context and responsible online engagement.
At this stage, no formal charges have been announced. NAPTIP’s statement makes clear that any further action will depend on credible evidence. Meanwhile, the Simi old tweets controversy continues to unfold across digital platforms, highlighting how archived online content can resurface years later and shape public discourse.
As authorities assess the situation, the broader conversation has shifted toward child protection Nigeria standards and the responsibilities attached to public commentary. For now, the matter remains under review, with officials urging restraint and cooperation as they evaluate the claims.
