FIFA Struggles to Fill Miami Stadium Despite Messi’s Presence
Ticket Sales Slump for FIFA’s Expanded Club World Cup in Miami
The inaugural edition of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup began with high expectations, featuring Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and a $1 billion prize pool. Hosted at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, the tournament was anticipated to attract massive crowds, especially with Messi’s global appeal.
However, just days before kickoff, ticket sales have fallen short of projections. Less than four days remain until the first match between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Inter Miami, yet the 65,326-capacity stadium remains notably underfilled. FIFA’s hopes that Messi’s presence would drive demand in the U.S. have not materialized as expected.

In response, FIFA has implemented significant ticket price reductions, including special deals for younger audiences. A notable offer is a five-game bundle for just $20, exclusive to students at Miami Dade College, which includes the opening match. This partnership with the college, boasting over 100,000 students, aims to boost attendance and engagement.

For the general public, ticket prices have been slashed from as high as $349 in December 2024 to as low as $55, using a dynamic pricing model that adjusts based on demand. Despite these measures, ticket sales remain sluggish, exposing challenges in marketing international club football within the U.S. soccer landscape.
The tournament’s struggles highlight the difficulty FIFA faces in translating star power into strong attendance, even with Messi on board. As the event unfolds, all eyes will be on whether these efforts can turn around attendance and global interest.
