Jay-Z Breaks Silence on Drake, Ye and Nicki Minaj During Comeback Performance

Jay-Z Fires Back at Drake, Ye and Nicki Minaj in Explosive Roots Picnic Freestyle

Jay-Z Roots PicnicJay-Z made a dramatic return to the stage after a seven-year hiatus with a headline-grabbing performance at the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.

The Brooklyn rap icon, born Shawn Carter, headlined the first day of the annual festival at Belmont Plateau, where more than 40,000 fans gathered for the event.

While the nearly three-hour performance featured several classic hits, it was an unexpected freestyle that quickly became the biggest talking point of the night.

In the almost four-minute freestyle, Jay-Z addressed years of criticism and took shots at several artists who have publicly targeted him in recent years, including Drake, Ye, and Nicki Minaj.

The rap legend appeared to respond directly to Drake after the Canadian rapper referenced him multiple times on his latest album Iceman, especially on the track Janice STFU.

During the freestyle, Jay-Z flipped Drake’s own words back at him.

“The jig is up, na I’m up 10, wrong chart champ you gotta look up again. Nas looked up to Hov, I never looked up to them,” he rapped.

Jay-Z Roots PicnicHe also referenced music ownership and publishing deals while questioning some artists’ financial independence.

Jay-Z also appeared to respond to Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, following previous comments the rapper made about Beyoncé and their children.

“Y’all trying to get under skin, I really get under skin,” Jay-Z rapped while defending his family during the performance.

The freestyle also included bars seemingly directed at Nicki Minaj, who has repeatedly criticised Jay-Z and Roc Nation executives online over money and business disputes.

Jay-Z suggested some critics were obsessed with attacking him while also making references to Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty.

Jay-Z Roots PicnicThe freestyle immediately sparked reactions online, with clips from the performance spreading across social media within hours.

Fans at Belmont Plateau erupted when Jay-Z smoothly transitioned from the freestyle into his classic The Blueprint hit U Don’t Know.

The setlist also included songs such as Run This Town, Dead Presidents I & II, Jigga My Na*, and *FkWithMeYouKnowIGotIt*.

Several surprise guests joined him on stage throughout the night, including Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Peedi Crakk, Memphis Bleek, and members of State Property.

Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill also thrilled the crowd with a performance of Dreams and Nightmares, while Jazmine Sullivan joined the show for Feelin’ It and Need U Bad.

Toward the end of the concert, Jay-Z admitted he missed performing live.

“I miss this sh**, I’m not going to lie,” he told fans.

The Roots Picnic appearance comes ahead of Jay-Z’s highly anticipated concerts at Yankee Stadium scheduled for July.
