Spanish Authorities Confirm Diogo Jota’s Death After Highway Crash

Liverpool Football Club forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in northwestern Spain, alongside his brother Andre Silva. The tragic incident occurred near the town of Cernadilla, Zamora, according to a statement released by Spanish authorities.
The 28-year-old Portuguese international, known for his speed and precision on the field, was reportedly killed in the early hours of Tuesday morning after the vehicle he and his brother were travelling in veered off the A-52 motorway and caught fire.
Spanish police confirmed:
“A road accident occurred at 12:30 am this morning at kilometre 65 of the A-52 motorway, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A vehicle left the road, and everything indicates a tire burst while overtaking. As a result of the accident, the car caught fire and both people were killed. Pending the completion of forensic tests, one of the deceased has been identified as Diogo Jota, a Liverpool FC player, and his brother, Andre Felipe.”

Diogo Jota, born in Porto, began his professional career at Paços de Ferreira before earning a move to Atlético Madrid. After a successful loan spell, he signed permanently for Wolverhampton Wanderers in England, eventually making a high-profile transfer to Liverpool in 2020.
At Liverpool, Jota became an instrumental player, scoring crucial goals across all competitions. He netted six times during the club’s 2023–24 Premier League-winning season. He was known off the pitch for his interest in video games and owned an eSports team. He regularly connected with fans through his Twitch streams.
Only two weeks before his death, Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The two had been together since 2012 and shared three children. In a June 22 post, Jota wrote, “Yes to forever,” celebrating their wedding day.

His brother, Andre Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer, playing for Portuguese second division side Penafiel.
