Shannon Sharpe Steps Away from ESPN Amid $50M Rape Lawsuit and Past Allegations
Sports analyst and former NFL star Shannon Sharpe announced Thursday that he is temporarily stepping away from ESPN after being hit with a $50 million rape lawsuit — while also facing renewed scrutiny over past misconduct allegations.
The lawsuit, filed earlier this week in Nevada, accuses the 56-year-old Sharpe of raping a woman he met at a Los Angeles gym in 2023. According to the complaint, the relationship began consensually but allegedly turned abusive after Sharpe humiliated her during an Instagram Live session. The woman is represented by high-profile attorney Tony Buzbee.
Sharpe has denied the allegations, writing on X:
“The relationship in question was 100% consensual.”
Past Allegations Resurface
Following the new lawsuit, additional allegations from Sharpe’s past have resurfaced.
Two sources told Front Office Sports that while Sharpe cohosted FS1’s Undisputed from 2016 to 2023, he was accused of choking a female production assistant on set. Although no lawsuit was filed at the time, sources say Sharpe and Fox Sports privately settled with the accuser for several hundred thousand dollars.
A spokesperson for Sharpe denied the choking allegation, describing it as “light physical interaction in a playful context.” Fox Sports declined to comment further.
Sharpe also previously faced a 2010 sexual assault accusation during his time at CBS’s NFL Today, which led to a brief suspension before the restraining order was dismissed.
Sharpe’s Defense and Response
Sharpe’s attorney, Lanny Davis, confirmed the authenticity of leaked audio where Sharpe is heard threatening to choke the Nevada accuser. However, Davis claimed the comments were made during consensual role-playing and were taken out of context.
Calling the lawsuit a case of “blackmail,” Davis alleged that the plaintiff demanded tens of millions of dollars during private mediation talks.
“This is a classic case of blackmail,” Davis said. “The plaintiff showed lawyers a tape and demanded a fortune in exchange for silence.”
Reports indicate Sharpe offered at least $10 million to settle before the lawsuit became public.
In a statement, ESPN expressed support for Sharpe’s decision:
“This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon’s decision to step away.”
Sharpe emphasized that he plans to return to ESPN ahead of the NFL preseason, explaining he is stepping back to “devote time to family” and “respond to these disruptive allegations.”
