Ghana to Offer 1,000 University Scholarships to ECOWAS Students
John Mahama Pledges 1,000 ECOWAS Scholarships to Strengthen Regional Unity
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold new initiative to award 1,000 tertiary scholarships to students from ECOWAS member states, a move aimed at reinforcing regional integration through education.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, April 22, during the official launch of the ECOWAS at 50 celebrations held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
“To mark this moment and strengthen regional bonds, Ghana is offering 1,000 scholarships to tertiary students from across the sub-region to study in our universities,” Mahama declared.
A Golden Gesture for ECOWAS at 50
The scholarship program is being rolled out as part of Ghana’s commitment to youth empowerment, education, and development, aligning with the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) vision of a more united and prosperous region.
“This is not just a gesture,” Mahama emphasized. “It is an act of solidarity—a bridge to a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners, but as partners.”
The ECOWAS at 50 launch drew presidents, diplomats, and leaders from across West Africa, gathered in Accra to reflect on five decades of cooperation and set new goals for the bloc’s future in peace, security, and socio-economic development.
The event also featured the unveiling of the official ECOWAS 50th anniversary logo, symbolizing unity and progress across the region.
