Outrage in Kenya as Autopsy Reveals Blogger Albert Ojwang Was Tortured

Autopsy Disputes Police Claims in Death of Kenyan Blogger Albert Ojwang

Kenya is still recovering from last year’s protests over a controversial finance bill, and the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang’, a young blogger from Homa Bay County, is tearing open fresh wounds and reawakening public anger.

Ojwang’ was arrested under unclear circumstances from his home—but his lifeless body later turned up, not in Homa Bay, but hundreds of kilometres away in a Nairobi morgue.

This week, government pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia revealed a chilling truth: Ojwang’ was tortured.

“This is unlikely to be a self-inflicted injury,” Midia said.
“The injuries were scattered—on the face, head, back, trunk, and limbs. Not consistent with the official version.”
The police had claimed Ojwang died after “banging his head on the wall.” But the autopsy suggests a calculated, violent assault—one he could not have inflicted on himself.

“Tortured, Not Suicidal”

Family forensic representative Mutuma Zambezi added:
“These were not the kind of injuries one inflicts on themselves.”
Even as Kenya’s Inspector General Japhet Koome Kanja announced the interdiction of officers involved, major questions remain:
  • Who ordered Ojwang’s arrest?
  • Who moved him from Homa Bay to Nairobi?
  • Who beat him—and why?
  • What was in his blog post?
The silence is deafening. The pain is rising.

Public grief has turned into tension. Mourners at the morgue shouted down politicians. A Homa Bay woman representative was blocked from addressing the crowd.

“Go address us in parliament,” a mourner yelled.
And with this year’s finance bill on the table, the streets may not stay silent. Last year’s June protests nearly paralyzed the nation. This year, the call isn’t political—it’s for justice.

A Father’s Tears

Outside the Central Police Station, Albert Ojwang’s father wept uncontrollably.
“My son only blogged,” he said. “Now he’s dead. Silenced.”
And many Kenyans are asking:
Without answers…
Without accountability…
Without dignity for the dead…

What other choice is left—except the streets?
