Thomas Partey Joins Villarreal After Arsenal Exit Amid Legal Charges
Ghana international Thomas Partey has signed with La Liga club Villarreal, days after parting ways with Arsenal and shortly after being charged with multiple sexual offences in the UK.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for £45 million, left the North London club at the end of June following the expiry of his contract.
Just four days later, Partey was charged with five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault against a third. He denies all charges. The allegations stem from a UK police investigation that began in February 2022.
Partey appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was granted conditional bail. He is prohibited from contacting the alleged victims and must notify authorities of any permanent address changes or international travel.
Despite the ongoing legal case, Villarreal has confirmed his signing and released a statement acknowledging the situation.
“The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England,” the statement read. “The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him.”
Villarreal Defends Partey Signing Despite Charges
Villarreal said it would respect the legal principle of the presumption of innocence and would not comment further due to legal restrictions.
His signing has already sparked controversy. Nearly 1,000 supporters have signed an online petition opposing the transfer, which was initiated by the Villarreal Report, a fan-led content platform.
In response, Villarreal reiterated its stance against violence and discrimination, stating:
“The club wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms.”
Partey is expected to join up with his new teammates on Friday. He is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on 2 September.
His transfer comes just a day after Villarreal defeated Arsenal 3-2 in a preseason friendly at the Emirates Stadium.
