Ghana Mourns 8 Killed in Military Chopper Crash

blankGhana’s Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday morning.

According to Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, the crash also claimed the lives of Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, deputy national security coordinator and former agriculture minister, and Samuel Sarpong, vice chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The victims were on board a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter that lost radar contact shortly after departing from Accra around 9:00 a.m. en route to Obuasi. The Ghana Armed Forces had earlier confirmed the aircraft was missing with five passengers and three crew members on board.

In a national address, the presidency extended condolences to the bereaved families and announced that all flags would fly at half-staff. President John Mahama also cancelled official activities in response to the tragedy.Ghana Ministers Die in Helicopter Crash

Boamah, a medical doctor, had previously served as Minister of Communications and Deputy Environment Minister. He was leading Ghana’s security efforts at a time of growing instability along the country’s northern border with Burkina Faso, amid rising arms trafficking and regional militant threats. His recent diplomatic missions had focused on navigating relations with military-led governments in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Boamah was also preparing to publish a memoir titled A Peaceful Man in an African Democracy, in honour of the late President John Atta Mills.

The crash is one of the most significant losses of top government officials in Ghana’s recent political history. An investigation into the cause of the incident is currently underway.
