Ghanaian Man Dies After Being Struck on Massachusetts Turnpike
A 35-year-old Ghanaian man, Patrick Sarpong, has died after being struck by a tractor-trailer while clearing snow from his vehicle along the Massachusetts Turnpike near Hopkinton.
The fatal incident occurred late Monday night, February 23, 2026, as severe winter weather swept across the region during a powerful blizzard. Authorities say Sarpong had finished work and was heading home when he pulled over at about 11:15 p.m. to remove snow that had accumulated on his car.
While he was outside the vehicle clearing the snow, a passing tractor-trailer struck him. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the collision, but he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the extent of his injuries. His body was later transported to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel officially confirmed his death.
The Massachusetts State Police confirmed that although the region was experiencing blizzard conditions, there were no travel restrictions in place in Hopkinton at the time. According to Sergeant Gregory Jones, the highway remained open to traffic and motorists were permitted to travel despite the severe weather.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to establish the precise circumstances of the crash. Investigators are examining visibility levels, road conditions, driver response, and whether weather-related factors played a role in the fatal collision.
Police say further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
