Men Determine Marriage Success – Mensa Otabil

Mensa Otabil Says Men Determine the Success or Failure of Marriage

Men Determine Marriage Success - Mensa OtabilFounder and leader of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Pastor Mensa Otabil, has stated that the success or failure of a marriage is largely determined by the man.

Speaking on the Christian Conversations podcast, co-hosted by ICGC New Wine leader Pastor Albert Ocran, Dr Otabil described his views as a personal but deeply held conviction about leadership and responsibility within marriage.

During the discussion, Pastor Otabil rejected the idea that headship in marriage should translate into control or intimidation. He also criticised situations where financial strength becomes the basis for dominance within a relationship.

Instead, he addressed whether a mature middle ground exists—one that reflects companionship rather than unhealthy power dynamics.

“I believe marriages survive based on the man,” he said. “Men determine the outcome of marriage; whether it’ll work or not.”

Dr Otabil explained that in many cultural and historical settings, particularly in Africa, men often assume leadership roles in marriage by default.

“Culturally, socially, historically… especially in an African context, the man assumes a leadership position,” he noted. He added that this position may be conferred regardless of education level or income status.

However, he stressed that leadership granted by tradition must be justified through action and character.

According to Pastor Otabil, headship in marriage is not about entitlement but accountability.

“When a position is given to you, you have to justify it; you have to live up to it,” he said.

He argued that leadership in marriage must be continually earned and demonstrated through sacrifice. Illustrating his point with practical examples, he suggested that true headship involves putting one’s spouse first, making concessions during conflict, and acting in the interest of the other.

“You now have to show headship. Headship means you’re going to sacrifice,” he explained.

Men Determine Marriage Success - Mensa OtabilBiblical Model of Marital Leadership

Pastor Otabil referenced Pauline teachings in the New Testament, describing Jesus Christ as the model for marital leadership through self-sacrifice.

He argued that sacrificial leadership naturally inspires respect and love, citing centuries of Christian devotion to Christ as an example.

“Men determine the temperature of the marriage,” he emphasised.

While acknowledging that leadership roles may be shaped by scripture, culture and society, the ICGC founder maintained that such roles must be exercised with humility and responsibility.

He urged men to view headship as stewardship—“something to account for”—rather than a position of control.

His remarks have sparked conversations about marriage leadership, responsibility and evolving gender dynamics within Christian and African contexts.
